From Frustration to Foundation

Over the course of a decade in the industry, Brandon saw for himself the shady business practices of some garage door companies. For that reason, at the start of 2024, Brandon did some self-reflection. He told himself, I am business-savvy; I know the ins and outs of garage doors; I could start my own garage door company and create a place where I would want to work.

So that is what he did, and Uplifting Garage Doors was born. He transformed his idea into reality by methodically moving through the process of acquiring the requisite certifications and insurance, buying a truck, and building his book of business one customer at a time.

As the owner and operator of Uplifting Garage Doors, Brandon believes that the best advertising comes in the form of word-of-mouth recommendations, neighbor-to-neighbor, and co-worker-to-co-worker referrals. What is Brandon’s competitive edge, over and above his ten-year career as a technician in the garage door industry? Perhaps it’s his perspective. He believes in work-life balance. He prioritizes his family, values his business, and seeks to invest in both. When asked about how he likes to spend his free time, Brandon highlights the fact that Utah is ‘the wilderness state.’

He expresses appreciation for his place and his people. Spending time in nature with his wife and four children tops his list of favorite hobbies. Born in Idaho and raised in Utah from the time he was 8, Brandon is a family man committed to living intentionally, which is why regular life for the McClellan family includes swimming in the neighborhood pool, picnics at Cottonwood Canyon, hikes in nearby mountains, and games around the kitchen table. UNO and Sorry! are current family favorites.

As the father of two daughters, whom he lovingly refers to as ‘Irish twins’ who recently graduated from high school, and two sons, ages 10 and 6, Brandon has his work cut out for him. 2024 marked the start of Uplifting Garage Doors, and, in a way, it marked a new season in Brandon’s life.

It comes as no surprise that Brandon fondly refers to his mother and father in conversations about Uplifting Garage Doors because they have been supportive parents who raised him and his four siblings with a solid moral compass and a strong work ethic. ‘Leave a room better than you found it’ is one of the adages in his bones, thanks to his principled upbringing.

Having grown up in a full household of seven, Brandon learned the value and necessity of hard work. He saw his parents work hard, and now, as an adult, he can see that they were teaching their children through their actions. Brandon has observed that his father still works on developing skills when he wants to learn something new. Brandon has seen the growth that has resulted. His mother, a teacher, to this day, demonstrates what it means to live a life of service.

The McClellans believe that everybody has a responsibility to the community, so it makes sense that Brandon would want to own and operate Uplifting Garage Doors—a company that very practically helps community members. ‘Work is part of life, and a lot depends on how you look at it,’ Brandon will say when reflecting on his career and his first year in business. ‘I look at each Uplifting Garage Doors job with the perspective that I get to do it.’ You can hear the humility and gratitude in his voice.
